“Although teacher-managed explicit reading comprehension instruction had a positive effect on children’s reading comprehension growth, especially for children with typical or below-gradelevel fall reading comprehension skills, on average, only about 1 min a day of language arts time was spent in explicit instruction in comprehension strategies, as defined in the NRP (2000) report and by the RAND study group (Snow, 2001). Although the research on the efficacy of teaching reading comprehension strategies is compelling and was certainly available to the school district at the time of this study (late 1990s), it does not appear to have found its way into most classrooms in this well-regarded school district. This school district is not alone; Pressley observed the same situation in New York classrooms (Pressley et al., 1998), and both the RAND study group (Snow, 2001) and the NRP documented this phenomenon. Calls for better teacher training and professional development appear to be well warranted. ”

“First findings of IEA’s “Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M)” had revealed differences in the demographic background, opportunities to learn (OTL), and outcomes of teacher education between student teachers from different countries. Two hypotheses are examined: OTL and teacher background are significant predictors of mathematics content knowledge (MCK) and mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) as outcomes. OTL effects are partly mediated by differential student teacher intake. Data from multi-level models support our hypotheses with respect to gender, high-school achievement, motivation, OTL in mathematics and the mediating effect of student teacher intake. Background affects only MCK but not MPCK.”
